Honest Product Review: Which Hair Colour Is Good for At-Home Use? My Experience With Popular Box Dyes in India

“Which hair colour is good?” is a question I get asked a lot, especially now that many of us prefer colouring our hair at home instead of visiting salons. India has plenty of budget-friendly boxed hair dyes, and as someone who has been colouring my hair at home for nearly nine years, I’ve tried several brands. This article is my honest, experience-based review of some of the most popular hair colour brands, including Yuthika Professional Crème Hair Color.

Before getting into the reviews, here’s a little background about my hair type and why I colour it.

My Hair Type and Why I Use Hair Colour

I have shoulder-length, jet-black, fine hair that is slightly wavy and tends to get oily. Because of my naturally oily scalp, my hair usually stays soft and moisturised, so most hair colours don’t cause severe damage.

I don’t colour my hair to cover greys. Instead, I do it to add dimension, texture, and a fuller look. When hair is a single dark shade, it can appear flat, especially if it is thin. Browns, burgundy, and subtle highlights help create volume and movement.

Here is my honest ranking and review of boxed hair dyes I’ve used over the years.

6. Revlon Colorsilk

I tried this while attempting to go lighter and achieve an ash-blonde tone. My hair was already auburn due to previous colouring, so I thought this would neutralise the red tones.

Unfortunately, instead of lightening my hair, it made my bleached sections turn dark brown again. It didn’t cause noticeable damage, but the result was disappointing and far from the shade shown on the box.

I’m unsure if it was a packaging or shade issue, but the outcome made me hesitant to try it again.

5. L’Oreal Excellence Crème

This hair colour sits at a higher price point, so I expected superior smoothness and shine. While my hair initially felt soft after using the conditioner included in the pack, the ends became dry and rough after a few washes.

My hair had grown out and was mostly virgin at that point, so I expected better results. For the price, the performance felt average.

I wouldn’t repurchase it, considering the texture changes I experienced.

4. BBlunt Salon Secret Hair Colour

This budget hair colour from a professional brand sounded promising, and I tried the burgundy shade. The colour did add visible shine, but the hair felt slightly rough to the touch.

It created surface shine rather than actual softness. However, given its affordability, the performance wasn’t terrible, especially compared to some more expensive options.

It is decent, but not something I would strongly recommend.

3. Yuthika Professional Crème Hair Color

I tried Yuthika Professional Crème Hair Color after hearing about its smooth texture and salon-like finish claims. I used a brown-burgundy tone for subtle dimension.

The first thing I noticed was the creamy consistency. It was easy to mix and apply evenly, and it did not drip. The colour developed gradually and looked natural instead of overly bold or artificial.

After rinsing, my hair felt softer than expected for a crème hair colour. It did not leave my hair overly dry, and there was a mild shine that looked healthy rather than glossy in an artificial way. The colour payoff was visible, especially under sunlight, and blended well with my natural black base.

What stood out was that it did not make my hair feel stiff or rough after multiple washes. While it did not dramatically transform texture, it maintained softness and manageability.

In terms of longevity, the colour stayed noticeable for a reasonable period and faded evenly. I did not experience irritation, but a patch test is always recommended.

Overall, this felt like a reliable option for at-home colouring, balanced in terms of affordability, performance, and hair feel.

2. L’Oreal Paris Fashion Highlights Hair Colour

This highlighting kit worked very well for adding dimension to my hair. The comb applicator made it easy to apply streaks without colouring the entire head.

The highlights added bounce and movement, and my hair did not feel dry afterward. Because I had shorter hair then, the strands were closer to my scalp and naturally moisturised, which may have helped.

This is a great choice if you want subtle highlights rather than full coverage.

1. Garnier Colour Naturals

One of the first boxed hair colours I ever used and still one of my favourites. It is affordable, easily available, and surprisingly gentle.

I expected dryness and breakage, but my hair actually felt soft and smooth after colouring. The colour lasted well and did not damage my strands noticeably.

One thing to note is that on very dark hair, the colour may not show unless left on longer than recommended. While I personally did not face irritation, extending application time may not suit everyone, so a patch test is essential.

Overall, this remains one of the best budget hair colours for at-home use.

Which Hair Colour Is Best?

Choosing the right hair colour depends on your hair type, expectations, and budget.

For affordability and softness, Garnier Colour Naturals works well.
For dimension and highlights, L’Oreal Paris Fashion Highlights is a good choice.
For balanced performance and a natural finish, Yuthika Professional Crème Hair Color stands out.
For experimentation, BBlunt Salon Secret is an option.
For premium pricing, L’Oreal Excellence Crème may work for some, though results can vary.

From my experience, no single product works perfectly for everyone. Hair texture, scalp type, and previous treatments all influence results.

If you are colouring your hair at home, always do a patch test, use conditioner after colouring, avoid over-processing, and choose shades close to your natural base for better results.

With the right product and care, at-home hair colouring can be convenient, budget-friendly, and effective.
